experimenting with the "growing" effect. I'd like to share this work in progress - growing letter "G". This is my very first try of "growing things, so any comments and advice are appreciated.

right now I am animating it with shape tweening. Would it be more efficient to animate it frame by frame?

it's cool!

but if you're talking about want to look like a "writing effect" in flash, it's best to use masking. the step is also use frame by frame

I just want different parts of the letter arrear as if they grow into the letter. (right now only 1 part "grows" as you can see)

I would animate it frame by frame.

The effect you get would be smoother and more like "growing".

Yes frame by frame is still the best way in Flash,
There is another way to do it with other program such as Adobe After Effect.

here's the reference :

Just found out that they have this write on effect to make it easier.

As others have said one of the best way is to do frame by frame. With thaqt said I also try out tweening as this can give a great effect also when used right.

As of roght now it does look very good my man keep it up!

Hey Resurepus,

Pas mal du tout! I would have to agree, animate it frame by frame, and add a mask, it will make the growing look smoother, and keep it on its natural 'growth track', and give the arch's growth a more natural curve action.

I woud like to see it when it is done. Please keep us updated. :)

it took me sevel hours to vectorize the letter and animate that tiny part. I wonder how much time it will take me to animate the whole thing. And Frame by frame is even more time consuming I suppose. But oh, well, I just need to do it and I will figure out how much time it was at the end :)

Thanks for comments, everybody!

Hey Resurepus,

I think it may take less time than you think.

I remember doing a growing word in After Effects, with the use of a mask. I cannot imagine the process being different in flash. On each frame, simply shift the mask back to reveal a bit more of the underlying curl.

Looks really cool, nice effect you got going there.

I'm no flash expert, but the mask solution seems the easiest to me.

There is always the masking option. You will loose the organic feel somewhat though unless you animate both the mask and the underlay. I've never really tried that now that I think about it, I don't even know if that's possible (though I don't see why not).

I'm not exactly sure where I saw this but I have heard that working backwards from end result to start using the eraser tool is a good way to achieve these effects, plus the added benifit of doing it in ways that masks just can't do.
